Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1247

This specimen was lot 1247 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €85 (about US$115 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, POMERANIE, Bogislaw XIV (1620-1637), AR 1/16 Taler, 1629, Stettin. D/ Ecu posé sur une croix longue. R/ Valeur et date dans le champ. Belle patine. Très Beau. (Germany, duchy of Pomerania, Bogislaw XIV, 1620-37, silver one-sixteenth thaler of 1629, Stettin mint. Obverse: shield posed over a long cross; reverse: value and date in the field. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"

This denomination, nicknamed a duttchen, was struck in the 1620's by the duke. On the lapse of the dynasty in 1637, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 2,68 g.

Catalog reference: KM 100, Hildisch 363; Olding 233.
