This specimen was lot 40328 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,610. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. 2,000 Zlotych, 1982. PCGS PROOF-68 DEEP CAMEO. Pope John Paul II. Mintage of 1,250 pieces." Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in several centuries, was a Polish celebrity of the first order and even the Communist regime could not pass up the opportunity to issue NCLT's in his honor. The 1982 series include 100, 200, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000 zlotych denominations in various metals.
