SB526-75313r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75313 in Stack's Bowers May 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $109. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. 2 Groschen, 1767-FS. Stanislaus Augustus. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. From the Collection of Kazmier Wysocki, former mayor of Hackensack, New Jersey." Stanislas Poniatowski, a former lover of Catherine the Great, was installed as her puppet king on the death of the Saxon August III. When he proved to be insufficiently pliant, the partitions began. This type was struck in substantial numbers at Warsaw 1766-86. Mintages dwindled after the first partition of 1775 and the later dates are scarce. One thaler = 8 złotych = 32 groszy. The reverse of this coin states "2.GR.CLX.EX MARCA PURA.COL.", or 160 pieces per one Cologne mark. The convention thaler was one tenth of a Cologne mark.

Recorded mintage: 7,110,000.

Specification: 3.34 g, 0.587 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-184; Kop-2322.
