Poland 1775-EB thaler Dav-1619
This specimen was lot 1996 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,679 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖNIGREICH Stanislaus August, 1764-1795. Konv.-Taler 1775, E-B, Warschau. Herrliche Patina, kl. Kratzer, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of Poland, Stanislaus Augustus, 1764-95, convention thaler of 1775, Warsaw mint. Well toned, small scratch, choice extremely fine.)"
This type issued 1768-82 is the most common Polish thaler of the eighteenth century. The kingdom of Poland, weakened by the devastation of the Great Northern War (1700-21), fell under the domination of her neighbors, Prussia, Russia and Austria. Stanislas Poniatowski, a former lover of Catherine the Great, was installed as her puppet king on the death of the Saxon August III. When he proved to be insufficiently pliant, the partitions began. In three slices, in 1772, 1793 and 1795, the entire state was devoured. Even then, Stanislas could not rally the greedy and selfish Polish nobility to defend the country. One thaler = 8 złotych = 32 groszy.
Recorded mintage: 33,000.
Specification: silver.
