Philippines 1977 5000 piso
This specimen was lot 3000 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"5000 Pisos 1977. Polierte Platte. (republic of the Philippines, five thousand pesos of 1977, proof.)"
This type is a Marcos-era commemorative of the Philippines. "The New Society" was a society free from corruption that ironically, Marcos and his cronies were practicing. The currency, which was called pesos and centavos during the American colonial period, was reformed in 1969 and renamed "piso" and "sentimo" which were the Tagalog translations. Locals, however, continue to use the old names.
Recorded mintage: 100 uncirculated plus 3,832 proof.
Specification: 68.74 g, 0.900 fine gold, 1.989 troy oz AGW, this specimen 68.74 g.
