Peru 1954 20 soles
This specimen was lot 39539 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $528.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 20 Soles, 1954. NGC MS-64. A tough date for world gold collectors attempting to complete a 20th century gold set with a coin from each year. The Peruvian 1954 issues are one of the few available world gold coins for the date. A choice example of the date with highly reflective nearly proof-like fields and sharply struck devices." This denomination, struck 1950-69, was theoretically a circulating coin but actually was a bullion piece like her sisters, the gold five, ten, fifty and hundred soles.
Recorded mintage: 1,732.
Specification: 9.36 g, 0.900 fine gold, .269 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-80; KM-229.
