Peru 1814-L JP 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 1234 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 4 escudos, Ferdinand VII, 1814 JP, NGC XF details / cleaned, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Rather lustrous for the assigned grade (more like AU in our opinion) but with obvious hairlines on that side, minor natural flaws near rims here and there, lightly red-toned and very scarce. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This specimen was lot 1178 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $1,920. In 1812-13, the Lima mint struck four escudos using the draped bust punch intended for the silver two reales. In 1814, the bare bust (shown here) was adopted and used until the end of colonial issues in 1821. All dates are scarce to rare. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23.
