Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72106

This specimen was lot 72106 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1794-LM IJ. Lima Mint. Charles IV. PCGS AU-58. A choice example of a 4 Reales piece, exceedingly well-preserved and attractive. The fine details of the portrait, usually the first to wear off, are here presented fully and with crisp clarity. The legends and reverse devices are bold and uninterrupted. The whole coin is exquisitely toned with flashes of iridescent color and luster in the fields. An uncommonly beautiful coin. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Baldwin's Auctions (10/1995), Lot #656." This type is listed for Peru 1791-1808 and is scarce, especially in choice condition. Unlike the eight reales, the four reales was not hoarded. Assayer IJ is listed for 1787-1803. The fineness was lowered from .903 to .896 in 1785.
