Peru 1738-L N escudo
This specimen was lot 39526 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Escudo, 1738-LN. NGC EF Details--Plugged. With a mintage of 807 coins, not likely another example will be encountered anytime soon. Repaired as indicated on the holder, but with generous amounts of remaining detail. A real opportunity for the specialist in early Peruvian gold coinage." This type is recorded for 1702-45 and all dates are rare with tiny mintages. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
