Aureo sale 261, lot 293

Cob one reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "bits" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without. The fineness was lowered from 0.931 to 0.917 in 1728. Assayer Negron y Colmenares ("N") stamped his coins 1728-40. This specimen was lot 293 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,925). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1738. Felipe V. Lima. N. 1 real. Redonda. Tipo ´real´. Perforación. Rarísima. MBC+. (Philip V (1700-46), one real of 1738, Lima mint, round 'royal' strike. Holed, extremely rare, very fine or better.)"
