Peru 1712-L M escudo
This specimen was lot 49 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $13,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 1 escudo, 1712/1/0 M, very rare, NGC MS 66 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), finest and only example in NGC census, ex-1715 Fleet, ex-Ubilla-Echevez, ex-Almenara. Bold and perfectly centered castle side with clear 2/1 overdate but the 1/0 less obvious (die-match with a 1711/0 in the State of Florida Collection, coin number 1678, which is curiously NOT the same 1711/0 die as for the previous lot), the off-center cross also full but slightly crude, both sides struck from rusty dies, lustrous and rich gold in color. From the 1715 Fleet, with photo-certificate, pedigreed to the Real Eight Co. consignment sold as the Ubilla-Echevez Collection (stated on label) in the Christensen auction of October 1964 (lot 163), and pedigreed to the Almenara Collection and to the Baldwin's auction of October 2000 (lot 404), also plated in Frank Allen's 1967 The Numismatist article 'Previously Unknown Spanish Gold Coins.'" This type is recorded for 1702-45 and all dates are rare with tiny mintages. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
Recorded mintage: 1,642 (overdate not mentioned).
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.24 grams.
