Peru 1712-L M 2 reales
This specimen was lot 687 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 2 reales Royal (galano), 1712 M, extremely rare. Perfectly round as lightly shaved, with nearly full interior details but only small parts of legends due to flatness and wear, VG overall with dark contrasting toning, tiny hole to right of cross / bottom of pillars. By our records this is one of only two known, assuming the weight given for the other example in Swiss Bank Corp. Auction 43 (September 1997), lot 2384, is incorrect at 3.74 grams. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection of Lima Silver Cob 2 Reales." In 1684, the regime in Madrid finally permitted the viceroy to reopen the Lima mint on a permanent basis and two reales of this type were struck 1701-28. Assayer Melgarejo is reported for 1712-27. Specimens with legible dates are scarce. The mintage of gold commenced in 1696.
