The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 1 escudo, 1711/0 M, rare, NGC MS 65 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), finest known in NGC census, ex-Ubilla-Echevez, ex-Sotheby-Parke-Bernet, ex-Almenara. Broad, oblong flan with pristine surfaces and bold full details, also lustrous, the choice castle side with spots of light red toning, and the cross struck from a slightly rusty die. From the 1715 Fleet, with photo-certificate, pedigreed to the Real Eight Co. consignment as the Ubilla-Echevez Collection (stated on label) in the Christensen auction of October 1964 (lot 159) and in the Sotheby-Parke-Bernet (Los Angeles) auction of June 1973 (lot 592), and pedigreed to the Almenara Collection, also plated in Frank Allen's 1967 The Numismatist article 'Previously Unknown Spanish Gold Coins.'" This type is recorded for 1702-45 and all dates are rare with tiny mintages. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
