The first specimen is from the second period of operation for the Lima mint, 1577-88. When it was closed and the machinery taken to Potosi in Upper Peru to strike the silver emanating from there, the Lima mint would not reopen until 1660, despite repeated pleas from the Viceroy of Peru. This specimen was lot 139 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €240 (about US$310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"s/d. Felipe II. Lima. 1 real. Rara. MBC. (Peru, Philip II, undated one real of Lima mint, rare, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 2298 in Goldberg sale 122 (Los Angeles, June 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[2] noted, "Peru. Real, ND (Lima). Philip II, 1556-1598. Crowned arms, *.D/ I-P. Reverse: Arms. Salvaged. Details of Very Fine." Numerous varieties exist of this early cob one real. Cayón-3464 has the assayer's initial "D" to the left of the shield; Cayón-3465 has the "D" to the right, under a star; Cayón-3466 has the "D" to the right over the mintmark "P". This type superseded the first cobs, which had pillars and waves on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 grams, 0.931 fine silver, the first specimen 3,37 g; the second specimen 3.1 g.

Catalog reference: Cal. 634, the first specimen: Cayón-3467; the second specimen: Cayón-3464.
