Sedwick Treasure Auction 28, lot 538
Sed28-538r.jpg

This specimen was lot 538 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, 1 real, Philip II, assayer R (Rincon) to left, motto as PL-VSV-TR (no L) above denomination (dot), legends HISPA / NIARVM, ex-Jones (Plate Coin). Broad flan with much legend and full inner details but with much flatness (as struck), otherwise VF, faintly toned all over. Pedigreed to the Dr. Peter Jones collection, plated on page 129 of his book The First Coins of the Americas (2020), and to our Auction 12, with original lot-tag #971." Many varieties exist of this crude type. The dot indicating the denomination can be above or below the "PL-VSV-TR", the assayer "R" can be on the right or the left and the motto "PL-VSV[L]-TR[A]" has many variations. The Lima mint competed for silver with the Potosi mint (which was closer to the major mines) and colonial authorities closed it several times in the sixteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 3.06 grams.
