G119-2299r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1472 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $411.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/2 Real, ND (1556-98). Assayer R (Rincon). Philip II (1556-98). Very scarce. Dark toning. Choice for type." The second specimen was lot 2299 in Goldberg sale 122 (Los Angeles, June 2021), where it sold for $252. The catalog description[2] noted, "Peru. ½ Real, ND (Lima). Philip II, 1556-1598. Assayer, Rincon. Salvaged. Details of Very Fine." This type is from the first period of operation for the Lima mint, when it was closed and the machinery taken to Potosi in Upper Peru to strike the silver emanating from there. The second specimen is clearly Cayón-3393 but the first one has lions and castles on the reverse, which type is known only for assayer D.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 grams, 0.931 fine silver, the second specimen 1.6 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-3393, Calico-type-425 #712, KM 3.
