Sedwick Treasure auction 27, lot 504

This specimen was lot 504 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $553.35. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer Diego de la Torre, *-8 to left, P-oD to right. Typically well-detailed VF with nearly full legends and full crown and shield and cross, one weak spot in centers that harbors an old scratch on the obverse and deliberate X-mark (probably a metal test) on the reverse, low contrast." These early cobs of Philip II are undated and come in many varieties. For assayer D, Cayón notes different combinations of the value, mintmark "P" and assayer "D" or "oD" on the right or left of the shield (catalog nos. 3898-3907). This variety has the value on the left and the mintmark and assayer on the right.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 27.31 grams.

Catalog reference: S-L4; KM-14; Cal-654, Cayón-3899.
