This specimen was lot 20677 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[2] noted, "Passau. Johann Philipp Taler 1712, AU53 NGC, a pleasing example of this very scarce Taler with rich original patina and bold details. The Bishopric of Passau eventually became part of Bavaria." The Bishopric of Passau, between Bavaria and Austria, struck a few thalers in the eighteenth century, all now rare. The state fell to Bavaria during the Napoleonic upheavals and is now part of Germany.
