Künker Auction 424, lot 641

This specimen was lot 641 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$16,992 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Johann Philipp von Lamberg, 1689-1712. Dukat 1706, Regensburg. Münzmeister Johann Michael Federer. Stempelschneider P. H. Müller. IOAN · PHILIP · CARDINAL · DE LAMBERG · Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat, darunter Stern//· D · G · EP · - PATAV · - S · R · I · - PRINCEPS · Vierfeldiges Familienwappen mit Mittelschild der Herren von der Leiter (della Scala), dahinter Krummstab, Kreuz und Schwert gekreuzt, oben Kardinalshut mit herabhängenden Quasten, unten Flügel, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl 17 - 06. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Nur 953 Exemplare geprägt. Leicht gewellt, vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, John Philip of Lamberg, 1689-1712, ducat of 1706, Regensburg mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robes; reverse: quartered arms of the bishop with the escutcheon of von der Leiter, crossed crozier, cross and sword behind, cardinal's hat and date above. Extremely rare, only 953 pieces struck. Slightly wavy, extremely fine.)"

This was struck in Regensburg 1705-06 for John Philip (1651-1712), who was promoted to cardinal in 1700 and finished the St. Stephens cathedral in the town. The bishopric of Passau was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 and 1805.
