Passau 1698 ducat Fr-2069
This specimen was lot 640 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €7,000 (about US$9,912 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Johann Philipp von Lamberg, 1689-1712. Dukat 1698, Augsburg. Münzmeister Christian Hohleisen. Stempelschneider Philipp Heinrich Müller. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Gekröntes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Familienwappen mit zwei Mittelschilden von Passau und der Herren von der Leiter (della Scala) unter Mitra, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt, unten zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 98, darunter Stadtpyr zwischen Hufeisen. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Etwas berieben, vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, John Philip of Lamberg, 1689-1712, ducat of 1698, Augsburg mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robes; reverse: ornate, crowned oval quartered arms of the bishop with the mitred escutcheon of Passau, crossed crozier and sword behind, the date below. Extremely rare, polished, extremely fine.)"
This was struck in Augsburg for John Philip (1651-1712), who was promoted to cardinal in 1700 and finished the St. Stephens cathedral in the town. The bishopric of Passau was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 and 1805.
