Künker Auction 424, lot 645

This specimen was lot 645 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €400 (about US$567 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Johann Philipp von Lamberg, 1689-1712. Reichstaler 1696, Augsburg. Münzmeister Christian Hohleisen. Stempelschneider Philipp Heinrich Müller. R Feine Patina, kl. Fleck, winz. Randfehler, sehr schön. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, John Philip of Lamberg, 1689-1712, thaler of 1696, Augsburg mint.)"

This thaler was also struck in 1697. John Philip (1651-1712) was promoted to cardinal in 1700 and finished the St. Stephens cathedral in the town. The bishopric of Passau was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 and 1805.
