Künker sale 293, lot 1097

This specimen was lot 1097 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €975 (about US$1,314 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PASSAU, BISTUM, Johann Philipp von Lamberg, 1689-1712. Reichstaler 1694, Regensburg. Schrötlingsfehler, leichter Kratzer, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Auf der Rückseite ist der Heilige Stephan dargestellt, dem der Passauer Dom gewidmet ist. (bishopric of Passau, John Philip of Lamberg, 1689-1712, thaler of 1694, Regensburg mint. Edge defects, light scratches, extremely fine to uncirculated. St. Stephen, patron saint of the cathedral, is depicted on the reverse.)"

The bishop of Passau's diocese extended over the middle Danube valley of Bavaria and upper Austria but was overshadowed by his wealthier rival, the archbishop of Salzburg. His secular territory was mediatized by Napoleon in 1810 and handed over to Bavaria.
