Passau 1709 1/2 ducat Fr-2070
The first specimen was lot 6114 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,326 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PASSAU, BISTUM, Johann Philipp von Lamberg, 1689-1712. 1/2 Dukat 1709, Regensburg. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 65 (2868074-001). GOLD. R Nur 2.210 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. (bishopric of Passau, John Philip of Lamberg, 1689-1712, half ducat of 1709, Regensburg mint. Only 2,210 struck, outstanding example, about uncirculated, graded NGC MS-65.)"
The lucky purchaser of this lot obtained a bargain. The last half ducat from this state is dated 1716. Passau passed to Bavaria in 1810. The second specimen was lot 643 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,841 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Johann Philipp von Lamberg, 1689-1712. 1/2 Dukat 1709, Regensburg. Münzmeister Johann Michael Federer. Stempelschneider Johann Pichler. Monogramm, darüber Kardinalshut, unten zwei gekreuzte Palmzweige//Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Familienwappen mit Mittelschild der Herren von der Leiter (della Scala), zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 17 - 09, unten Flügel zwischen Rosetten. GOLD. R Prachtexemplar. Min. gewellt, fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, John Philip of Lamberg, 1689-1712, half ducat of 1709, Regensburg mint. Obverse: monogram, cardinal's hat above between palm branches; reverse: crowned and quartered arms of the bishop with the escutcheon of von der Leiter and the date. Rare, choice example, slightly wavy, about uncirculated.)"
