Künker Auction 424, lot 649

This specimen was lot 649 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €15,000 (about US$21,240 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Johann Philipp von Lamberg, 1689-1712. Reichstaler 1706, Regensburg. Münzmeister Johann Michael Federer. Stempelschneider Johann Adam Seitz. Von größter Seltenheit. Nur 800 Exemplare geprägt. Herrliche Patina, unregelmäßiger Rand, winz. Justierspuren, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, John Philip of Lamberg, 1689-1712, thaler of 1706, Regensburg mint. Extremely rare, only 800 pieces struck, superb patina, irregular edge, tiny adjustment marks, about extremely fine.)"

This was struck in Regensburg for John Philip (1651-1712), who was promoted to cardinal in 1700 and finished the St. Stephens cathedral in the town. The bishopric of Passau was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 and 1805.
