Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 45165

This specimen was lot 45165 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $70. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. 4 Soldi, 1866-R Year XXI. Rome Mint. Pius IX. NGC MS-62 Brown. A pleasing example of the type, with very dark patina and glossy surfaces." This type was minted at Rome 1866-69 in substantial quantities and is common. Four soldi = twenty centesimi = 1/5 lira. The pope was enjoying his last days as an independent potentate; when French troops left in 1870, Italian troops marched in and forcibly unified Rome with the rest of the kingdom of Italy.
