Sincona sale 77, lot 2690

This specimen was lot 2690 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$170 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY | Vatican - Church State. Pius IX. 1846-1878. 1/2 Soldo 1867.Anno XXII R, Roma. NGC MS66 BN." After centuries of using a medieval mix of doppie, zecchini, giulii, grossi, etc., the coinage was reformed in 1830 to use 100 baiocchi = one scudo. The coinage was reformed again in 1866 to use centesimi and lire. The Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended. This half soldo was 1/40 of a lira. This type was struck 1866-67 and is common in circulated condition.
