This specimen was lot 7549 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Soldo, 1867-R Year XXI. Rome Mint. Pius IX. PCGS MS-62 Brown. Small date variety. A wholesome example with a rich brown color with a good deal of remaining red luster in the protected areas. This lovely piece is the second finest certified by PCGS with the brown designation." After centuries of using a medieval mix of doppie, zecchini, giulii, grossi, etc., the coinage was reformed in 1830 to use 100 baiocchi = one scudo. The coinage was reformed again in 1866 to use centesimi and lire. The Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended. This soldo was 1/20 of a lira. This type was struck 1866-67 in large and small date varieties, none of which obtain a premium.

Recorded mintage: 6,500,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 5 g, copper.
