This specimen was lot 7548 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. 4 Soldi, 1867-R Year XXI. Rome Mint. Pius IX. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. The only certified example of the type at PCGS. A lovely near-Gem example with an abundance of luster remaining and some silky brown patina." After centuries of using a medieval mix of doppie, zecchini, giulii, grossi, etc., the coinage was reformed in 1830 to use 100 baiocchi = one scudo. The coinage was reformed again in 1866 to use centesimi and lire. The Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended. This four soldi was one fifth of a lira. This type was struck 1866-69 in large quantities.

Recorded mintage: 2,100,000 of year XXI plus 2,876,000 of year XXII.

Specification: 20 g, copper, 36 mm diameter.
