Goldberg sale 70, lot 3733
Papal St 1823 doppia rev Goldberg 70-3733.jpg

This specimen was lot 3746 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States - Papal/Roman States. Doppia, 1823-R. Montenegro catalog value 22000 euros in XF. Sede Vacante. Papal arms. Reverse: St. Peter seated. Only a few pieces known to exist. Extremely Rare. NGC graded AU-55." The SCWC does not list this type as particularly rare but the SCWC doesn't know everything. Sede vacante, literally "vacant seat," refers to coinage issued by the papal bureaucracy during the interval between the death of a pope and the election of his successor which, in some cases, has taken over a year. A doppia may originally have been a double ducat but by this period was substantially lighter. It was tariffed at three scudi.

Recorded mintage: 1,100.

Specification: 5.46 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-250 (listed only as Rare); Mont-147, KM-1086; CNI-1; Pagani-122; Muntoni-1; Ber-3246.
