The first specimen was lot 25185 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Pius VII gold Doppia 1817-R Anno XVIII, MS63 NGC, well-struck with full mint luster, tiny natural flan flaw near the rim." A doppia was originally a double scudo but by this period was substantially lighter. The SCWC lists this type for 1815, 1817 and 1823. The last doppia was struck in 1834.
