Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740. This type is noted for 1823 only, being issued after the death of Pius VII, and is rather scarce. The second specimen was lot 1651 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SEDISVAKANZ 1823. Die Münzstätte Bologna. Scudo romano 1823 B, Bologna. Mit Randschrift: IN TERRA PAX [drei Ringe übereinander]. Prachtexemplar mit feiner Tönung. Kl. Stempelfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 281, Osnabrück 2016, Nr. 1869. (Papal States, sede vacante, scudo Romano of 1823, Bologna mint with edge lettered 'IN TERRA PAX'. Cabinet example with fine toning, minor die flaws, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 26.42 g, 0.917 fine silver, the second specimen 26,19 g.
