Papal St Dav-183 rev Tom F.jpg

The first specimen was lot 3569 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$743 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VATIKAN / KIRCHENSTAAT Pio VII. 1799-1823. Scudo 1818, Bologna. Gutes vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Pius VII, 1799-1823, scudo of 1818, year XVIII, Bologna mint, good very fine to extremely fine.)"

Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740. This type is noted for 1815 (Rome) and 1816-18 (Bologna) and is rather scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 26.42 g, 0.917 fine silver, the first specimen 26.33 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-183; KM-1275, Pagani-87, Ber-3223.
