Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740. This type is noted for 1816-18 (Bologna) and is rather scarce. This denomination, equal to one fifth of a scudo, was last coined in 1823 and was superseded by the twenty baiocchi (KM-1317) after 1834.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 5.28 g, 0.917 fine silver.
