SB824-42445r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42445 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). Scudo, 1823-R. Rome Mint. Sede Vacante. PCGS AU-55. A RARE one-year type from a reported mintage of a mere 885 pieces, and the first example we are able to recall having offered. Overall slate gray in color with mild wear present atop the high points in line with the assigned grade. From the Richard Margolis Collection." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740. This type is noted for 1823 only, being issued after the death of Pius VII, and is rather scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 26.42 g, 0.917 fine fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-184; KM-1293; Pag-123; Berman-3247; Gig-3; Mont-149; Munt-2.
