Künker Auction 441, lot 5034

This specimen was lot 5034 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,307 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN Pius VI., 1775-1799. Carolino da 5 Baiocchi (1/2 Paolo) 1780, Rom. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 65 (Top Pop) (6643812-019). Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. (Italy, Papal States, Pius VI, 1775-99, carlino of five baiocchi or half paolo of 1780, Rome mint. Graded NGC MS-65, rare in this quality, choice example.)"

This type was issued 1778-80 and 1783 for Pius VI (1775-99) from the Bologna mint (not Rome). At Bologna, 80 bolognini = one scudo instead of one hundred baiocchi as in Rome. Therefore four bolognini = five baiocchi = one grosso. Other five bolognini exist for 1780 (KM 274).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.32 g, 0.917 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 272, Ber-3060, Muntoni 232 b; Toffanin 2837/7.
