Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 32567
SB524-32567r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32567 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). 5 Bolognini, 1778. Bologna Mint. Pius VI. PCGS AU-58. An attractive silver issue with sharp details and much originality remaining." This type was issued 1778-83 for Pius VI (1774-99) from the Bologna mint. At Bologna, 80 bolognini = one scudo instead of one hundred baiocchi as in Rome. Therefore four bolognini = five baiocchi = one grosso. Other five bolognini exist for 1778 (KM 261, 273, 274, 275), all very similar.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.32 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-272; Berman-3060.
