Rome Mint. Pius VI. PCGS AU-55." This type was struck 1777-78 and 1794-96. As the economy of he Papal States became more precariously balanced on the issue of paper money, the mint resorted to striking more billon coinage such as this two baiocchi. The French invasion of 1795 dislocated the economic system, causing the paper currency to collapse and hard money to go into hiding.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon.
