Papal States 1758 zecchino Fr-235
This specimen was lot 3572 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Sedisvakanz 1758. Zecchino 1758, Rom. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Italy, Papal States, sede vacante, zecchino of 1758, Rome mint. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This is the only gold coin of this particular interregnum, which lasted May to July 1758. Confusingly, KM 983 is listed in the SCWC as an issue of Benedict XIV (which it is not) as well as a sede vacante issue. Another zecchino, KM 984, was struck in 1758 for Clement XIII.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.45 g, 0.998 fine gold, this specimen 3.42 g.
