Künker sale 354, lot 6028

The first specimen was lot 35024 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $588. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Testone, 1677. Rome Mint. Innocent XI (1676-89). Light chasing in fields on reverse. Toned. From the Demarete Collection." The second specimen was lot 6028 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,505 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Innocenz XI. 1676-1689. Testone A II (1677/1678), Rom. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Tönung, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Italy, Papal States, Inncoent XI, 1676-89, testone of the year 2, Rome mint. Attractive example with fine toning, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1677 and in the year V without date. The testone was thirty baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.59 g, silver, .916 fine, the second specimen 9.53 g.

Catalog reference: Berman-2100. KM 397, Muntoni 58.
