Künker sale 264, lot 3198

This specimen was lot 3198 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,105 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN Innocenz XI. 1676-1689. Quadrupla AN III (1678/1679), Rom. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Die personifizierte unbefleckte Empfängnis sitzt v. v. in Strahlenkranz auf Wolken und Regenbogen, unten das mit dem Kardinalshut bedeckte Wappen Corsini. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Henkelspur, Felder und Rand bearbeitet, sehr schön. (Papal States, Innocent XI, 1676-89, quadrupla of the year III (1678-79), Rome mint. Bust right in ornate vestments; reverse: The allegorical Immaculate Conception sitting in an aureole on clouds and rainbows, below: the cardinal's hat and the Corsini arms. Very rare, mounted, tooled in fields and on edge, very fine.)"

This denomination was the largest gold coin issued by the pope during the seventeenth century. Called a quadrupla scudi d'oro, it was about 4% lighter than a similar four ducats. The photo in the SCWC shows an example of KM 288 from the prior reign.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 13.44 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 13.28 g.
