The first specimen was lot 3559 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"VATIKAN / KIRCHENSTAAT Innocenzo XI. 1676-1689. Piastra 1680, Rom. Fast sehr schön. (Papal States, Innocent XI, 1676-89, piastra of 1680, Rome mint. Good very fine.)"

Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1680-81 and is reasonably available. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, the first specimen 30.91 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-4090; KM-421.1; Berman-2086.
