Künker sale 403, lot 1361

This specimen was lot 1361 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €280 (about US$367 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST URBAN VIII., 1623-1644. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone A XX (1642/1643), Rom. Mit Wappen der Münzmeister Antonio Francesco Franzetti e Prospero Pavia auf der Rückseite. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Urban VIII, 1623-44, testone of the year 20, Rome mint, with the mintmaster's arms on the reverse. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was also struck dated 1642 and year XXI. The reverse legend is from the ancient prayer, "Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix. Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. Amen." = "We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen."
