Silver piastri are popular with collectors not only for their Catholic associations but also the extraordinarily vivid portraits of the various popes, including Urban VIII shown here. This type is listed for year XII (1634) and XX (1643). This specimen was lot 24225 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Piastra, 1643-GM. Urban VIII (1623-44). NGC AU-53. A few minor planchet flaws on both sides but a strong strike and even gray toning. Attractive."
