Künker sale 403, lot 1369

This specimen was lot 1369 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$9,841 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ X., 1644-1655. Die Münzstätte Rom. Piastra del Giubileo ANNO VII/1650, Rom. Die geöffnete Heilige Pforte mit Veronika. . RR Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, fast vorzüglich. (Papal States, Innocent X, 1644-55, piastra of the Jubilee year 1650, Rome mint. Obverse: the opening of the Holy Door with veronica. Very rare, very attractive example with fine patina, about extremely fine.)"

This rare type was struck for the Holy Year of 1650. It is unusual in depicting the veronica attached to the open Holy Door. Wikipedia comments, "According to Church tradition, Veronica was moved with sympathy seeing Jesus carrying the cross to Calvary and gave him her veil so that he could wipe his forehead. Jesus accepted the offer, and when he returned the veil the image of his face was miraculously captured on it. The resulting relic became known as the Veil of Veronica."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 31,98 g.
