Papal States (1492-1503) grosso
This specimen was lot 548 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
Flan court. Belle patine. Très Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Alexander VI (1492-1503), silver grosso, Rome mint. Obverse: arms, crossed keys, tiara within quadrilobe; reverse: SS. Paul and Peter standing, one holding a sword, the other a key, 'ROMA' below. Tight flan, nice toning, very fine.)"
This is the only grosso struck at Rome during this reign, which is why we have not included the Berman number in the title. It is scarce but not rare. The "tight flan" noted in the description, as well as the low weight, suggests that this specimen has been clipped.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.26 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 2,80 g.
