southeast France at the end of the Hundred Years War

This specimen was lot 549 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Alexandre VI (1492-1503), (Rodrigo de Borja y Borja), AR carlin, Avignon. D/ ALEXAN-DER PP VI Le Pape trônant de f., ten. une longue croix. R/ + SAN-TVS- PET-RVS Croix longue cantonnée de clés en sautoir. Très rare. Beau à Très Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Alexander VI (1492-1503), silver carlino, Avignon mint. Obverse: the pope enthroned, bearing a cross. Reverse: long cross, crossed keys in quarters. Very rare, fine to very fine.)"

This carlin was issued from the Avignon mint in southern France where the pope had an enclave. Berman notes that the carlin was equal to a grosso but this specimen is too light to pass for a grosso.
