Papal States (1431-47) ducat Fr-3a
Eugene IV was the second pope to strike gold coins with his own name. This ducat is the commoner of two types for the reign. In the other (Fr-3), St. Peter is not surrounded by a quatrefoil. The second specimen was lot 1268 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST EUGEN IV., 1431-1447. Die Münzstätte Rom. Ducato papale o. J., Rom. Ohne Münzzeichen. Der Vierpaß auf Vorder- und Rückseite mit Perlenkreis geschmückt und der Heilige schaut nach l. GOLD. R Leicht korrodiert, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Eugene IV, 1431-47, undated papal ducat, Rome mint, without mintmark. The obverse and reverse quadrilobes are decorated with circles of pearls and the saint looks to the left. Rare, light corrosion, very fine to extremely fine.)"
