Papal States (1431-47) ducat Fr-3
This specimen was lot 1267 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,674 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST EUGEN IV., 1431-1447. Die Münzstätte Rom. Ducato papale o. J., Rom. Mit Münzzeichen Kopf am Ende der Vorderseitenumschrift und Rosette r. neben dem Heiligen auf der Rückseite. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Leicht gewellt, sehr schön. (Papal States, Eugene IV, 1431-47, undated papal ducat, Rome mint, with a head privy mark on the obverse legend a rosette on the reverse near the saints. Extremely rare, slightly wavy, very fine.)"
Eugene IV was the second pope to strike gold coins with his own name. Two types exist; Fr-3 shows the pope's arms in a circle and Fr-3a shows his arms in a quadrilobe.
