Sincona sale 80, lot 2814

This specimen was lot 2814 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,038 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Vatican - Church State, Senat von Rom, 1350-1439. Zecchino o. J. (nach 1431), Roma. Mit dem Wappen der venezianischen Kaufmannsfamilie Condulmaro auf der Vorderseite. Selten. NGC MS66. Prachtexemplar. (Papal States, senatorial issue, undated zecchino, Rome mint, with the arms of Condulmaro on the obverse. Rare, Cabinet piece.)"

Berman[2] comments, "The senatorial ducat, the first successful gold coin of medieval Rome, was introduced between 1317 and 1340. It has generally been divided into three periods by the form of the legend. The issues of each period exhibit numerous varying moneyers' marks which may one day prove the clue to their accurate sequencing and dating. This series was superseded by conventional papal ducats under Eugene IV (1431-47)."

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW. This specimen is 3.51 g.
