Overijssel 1736 gulden
This specimen was lot 71361 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Overijssel. Gulden, 1736. Privy Mark: crane. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. An overall pleasing example with just light handling and a few contact marks, while still retaining a hint of luster and offering a charming gray tone." This type was issued by the various provinces of the Netherlands 1694-1794 and was tariffed at twenty stuivers. The SCWC does not list any gulden for Overijssel after 1769. We note the rose privy mark (KM 63.1, struck 1698-1710), the crane privy mark (shown here, KM 63.2, struck 1715-23, 1733-38, 1748-49) and the lily or eagle privy mark (KM 63.3, struck 1722-25, 1733-38, 1748-49, 1761-69). Despite the long run of issue and the substantial mintage, it is not often seen at American coin shows.
